SLOVENIA IS AN EMERALD IN EUROPE’S JEWELLERY BOX, GLITTERING GREEN WITH NATURAL FORESTS

With its exceptional natural beauty, Slovenia – the green heart of Europe is a true oasis in the middle of the most populated continent on earth. Slovenia is the third most forest-covered country in Europe, since as much as 60 percent of its territory is covered with forests. Green is therefore the prevailing colour due to the extensive forests and other green areas.

The main product of the forest is wood, which is used in many areas, including cosmetics. Silver fir wood extract comes from the depths of the Kočevje forest of in the unsullied nature of Slovenia. It has a rejuvenating and regenerating effect on your skin.

SILVER FIR WOOD EXTRACT – UNIQUE ON THE GLOBAL MARKET

A patent, was granted for its development based on the results of my master’s thesis research carried out at the VIST Institute of Cosmetics in Ljubljana, in which we discovered many positive effects associated with this extract. Before my master’s work, there had been no published research on the in vivo effects of silver fir wood extract on the skin.

The extract of silver fir wood is obtained with a state-of-the-art process that uses no alcohol or other solvents. The process is also eco-conscious and sustainable, using only hand-selected branches from regular felling. Fir trees grow in our forests where we can see the power of nature in its purest form, untainted by chemicals.

Silver fir extract has a range of beneficial effects, foremost being its antioxidant effects. Its antioxidant activity is higher than Resveratrol, twice as high as vitamin E, and almost four times as high as green tea.

The best indicator of how extraordinary the effects of extract of silver fir wood are the studies we have carried out on it, especially those with volunteers trying extract of silver fir wood.

These have shown remarkable results for skin rejuvenation:

  • Skin hydration was improved by 26%.
  • Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was greatly reduced (20%).
  • The density of the dermis improved by 17% after 12 weeks of applying the silver fir wood extract cream.
  • Skin elasticity increased by 43%.
  • The volume of wrinkles decreased on average by 34% and their area was reduced by 37%.
  • Collagen and elastin synthesis increased by 34%.
  • Hyperpigmentation decreased by 41%.
  • The cream caused an increase in the minimum erythema dose, which increased by 9%. Applying silver fir extract cream can therefore help protect the skin from harmful UV radiation.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

Volunteer 1 had periorbital wrinkles before she started using the test cream (Figure a). She had two pronounced wrinkles under her eye, but the use of the test cream shortened and flattened them. There was a visible improvement in surface lines and dynamic mimic wrinkles after six weeks (Figure b). At the last measurement date (Figure c), both wrinkles became less pronounced and less deep, and the wrinkle length also decreased.

Condition of the left periorbital wrinkles, photographed from the left side: (d) before using the placebo cream, (e) after 6 weeks of use, and (f) after 12 weeks of use.

Volunteer 1 had pronounced periorbital wrinkles before she started using the placebo cream (Figure d). After six weeks (Figure e), the condition of the wrinkles deteriorated as a result of the volunteer’s exposure to sun between measurements. There is no visible improvement after twelve weeks of using the placebo cream (Figure f) as the length of the wrinkles remained the same.

INTERPRETATION OF THE ULTRASOUND IMAGE OF THE DERMIS

  • Lighter colors are areas with strong reflexes and reflect solid structures: collagen and elastin
  • Darker colors represent areas in the skin with a low reflection. These are primarily homogeneous structures like fat, water and blood.

HYPERPIGMENTATIONS’ IMPROVEMENT

Severe hyperpigmentation was observed in two volunteers, thus this part is only descriptive due to the small sample size, but the results show that silver fir wood extract may potentially have an effect on lightening of various hyperpigmentations.

  • Volunteer 1 had pronounced hyperpigmentation in the lateral periorbital part of the face, which occurred while taking birth control pills.
  • Volunteer 3, however, had pronounced age-related hyperpigmentation (solar lentigines) in the lateral periorbital part of the face.

Hyperpigmentation status in volunteer 1: Figure (a) shows the condition before use; and (b) after 12 weeks of use of the test cream; Figure (c) before use; and (d) after 12 weeks of use of the placebo cream; the ends of lines indicate the places of comparison.

After 12 weeks, age-related hyperpigmentation in volunteer 1 lightened by -32% and changed color by -36%.

Hyperpigmentation status in volunteer 3: The figure shows a decrease of skin hyperpigmentation in volunteer 3, namely hyperpigmentation
before use (Figure a) and after twelve weeks of application of the test cream (Figure b).
Figure b shows a significant reduction in the pigmented part when using the test cream.

After 12 weeks, age-related hyperpigmentation in volunteer 3 lightened by -15% and changed color by -64%.
